Energy systems Flashcards
What are the three energy systems
ATP-CP
Lactic acid (anaerobic glycolysis)
Aerobic (aerobic glycolysis)
What is the fuel used for ATP-PC system
The fuel used is glycogen (carbohydrates) stored in muscles
What is the fuel for anaerobic/lactic acid system
The fuel is exclusively carbohydrates
What is the fuel for the aerobic system
Fats, carbohydrates, and protein (last resort)
What time period does the ATP-PC system last for
1-10 seconds
What time period does the lactic acid system last for
10-30 seconds
What time period does the aerobic system last for
30 seconds onwards
What intensity do the three systems work at
ATP-PC system: maximal 95% onwards
Lactic acid system: near maximal 85-95%
Aerobic system: Sub maximal less than 85%
What muscle fibre and colour is associated with each energy system
ATP-PC system: White, fast twitch
Lactic acid system: White, fast twitch
Aerobic system: Red,slow twitch
What sports use the ATP-PC system the most
High jump Long jump Shot put 100 metre sprint Golf swing Gymnastics
What fitness tests are used to test the ATP-PC system
Vertical jump Grip strength Maximal leg press Bench press Basketball throw
What sports dominantly use the lactic acid system
200 metre sprint
200 metre swim
400 metre run
What fitness tests are used to test the anaerobic system
Push ups
Sit ups
Lunges
(All in a 30 second period)
What sports dominantly use the aerobic system
Marathon runners
Long distance swimmers
Afl midfielder
Rowers
What fitness tests are used to test the aerobic system
