Energy systems Flashcards

1
Q

Name and describe the three key processes involved in the aerobic energy system

A
  • One key process is glycolysis. This is where glucose is broken down into pyruvic acid and is then converted into actyl-coa in addition to this 2 atp molecules are produced
  • Another key process is kreb cycle which is where the actyl - coa undergoes oxidation carbolation which causes co2 and h2 to be produced and also produces 2 atp molecules
  • lastly another key process is electron transport chain. this is where hydrogen is carried to the electron transport by hydrogen carriers and 34 atp molecules are produced.

Q

Describe the process of ATP resynthesis in the mitochondria ?

A
  • breakdown of pyruvic acid
  • converted to acetyl coa
  • oxidation of citric acid
  • production of co2 produces 2 molecules of atp
  • electron transport chain

Q

outline the advantages and disadvantages

A

Advantages - more atp is produced ( 38 ), no fatiguing by products e.g lactic acid, lots of triglycerides and glycogen stores so exercise can last a long time.
Disadvantages - complicated systems cannot be used straight away , fatty acid transport to muscle is slow so it requires 15% more oxygen to break down rather than glycogen.

Q

What happens during the ATP-PC system ?

A

Phosphocreatine which is used as a fuel is broken down quickly and easily to release energy to resynthesise ATP. ITs rapid availability is important for providing contraction of high power however it only last up to 10 seconds and can only be replenished when intensity of activity is submaximal. Enzyme creatine linase detects high levels of adp and triggers atp resynthesis.

Q

outline the advantages and disadvantages of atp-pc system ?

A

Advantages - It can be resynthesised rapidly as they are replenished within 3 mins , there is no fatiguing by product and the system can be extended through the use of creatine.
Disadvantages - limited supply of pc in the body , 1 atp molecule is regenerated for 1 molecule of pc and pc resynthesis can only take place in the presence of 02
