Energy Stores And Systems Flashcards
What is a system?
A system is an object or a group of objects
What happens when a system changes?
There are changes in a way energy can be stored when a system changes
In what ways can energy be stored? There are 8 stores
- Chemical (due to chemical bonds) e.g. food, fuel, batteries
- Kinetic (due to movement)
- Gravitational (due to height)
- Elastic (due to stretching or compressing)
- Thermal (because of a body’s temperature)
- Magnetic (due to magnetic forces)
- Electrostatic (due to electrostatic forces)
- Nuclear (due to forces in the nucleus of an atom)
How can energy be transferred from one store to another?
By Energy carriers and pathways
- Mechanical - work done by force
- Electrical - work done by a current
- Heating - because of temperature difference
- Radiation e.g. light, infra red
A ball projected upwards - what energy transfer?
Kinetic - work done by gravity - gravitational
A car crashing into a wall - what energy transfer?
Kinetic - work done by force of wall - thermal
A car accelerating up a hill - what energy transfer?
Chemical - work done by force of engine - kinetic + gravitational
A car slowing down by braking - what energy transfer?
Kinetic - work done by frictional force at brakes - thermal
Bringing water to a boil in a electric kettle - what energy transfer?
Chemical (fuel) - work done by electrical current - thermal
