Density Flashcards
1
Q
What is density?
A
It is the amount of mass per unit area and it’s how tightly packed together matter is.
2
Q
What is the equation for density?
A
Density = mass ➗ volume P = m ➗ v Density = kg/m3 Mass = kg Volume = m3
3
Q
How do you find the density of a regular shaped object eg block of wood or iron or aluminium?
A
Use a ruler, top pan balance, a calculator and a selection of materials
Conclusion is that density is particular to the material not the size
4
Q
How do you find the density of an irregular shaped object?
A
- Use a displacement can, small beaker, measuring cylinder, irregular shaped object and a top pan balance
- Measure V1-volume and mass of water measured in a small beaker, weighed on the top pan balance
- Add object then measure V2-volume and mass of irregular shaped object in water in small beaker
- Density is difference between V2 and V1
5
Q
How do you find the density of a liquid?
A
- You need a measuring cylinder and top pan balance
- Weigh empty measuring cylinder
- Add certain volume of liquid and weigh new mass
- Difference in mass and volume allows you to work out density
