Energy Pathways Flashcards
What is an energy pathway?
The route taken by form of energy from it’s source to point of consumption
What are the potential disruptions to pathways?
Terrorism- May damage pipelines
Natural disasters- May damage pipelines
Piracy- Compromise boats/ ships
Extreme weather- May damage power lines
What is an energy pathways choke point?
A narrow sea channel where by transport routes can be easily disrupted
E.g. Suez Canal, which allows quicker, safer route into Europe from Asia by boat
Global coal energy pathways
Japan, China, Korea are large importers
Europe major importer from Russia + USA
USA large exporter
Global oil energy pathways
Middle east largest exporter to Asia, Europe, Americas
USA major importer from most countries
Specific Pathway Examples
Nordstream:
Russia to Europe
ESPO
Russia to East Asia
What is a transit state?
A country in which energy flows through on it’s way from producer to consumer
This means many energy pathways rely on multilateral and bilateral agreements as they may need to travel through transit states
