Alternatives To Fossil Fuels Flashcards
What are renewables?
Infinite energy source e.g. solar, biomass, wind
What are recyclables?
Will eventually run out but not as fast as fossil fuels e.g. nuclear
Solar
Advantages- No emissions, currently serving 73% homes in some areas of UK
Disadvantages- Consumes productive farmland that may be better producing food instead, expensive so only accessible for developed countries
Wind
Advantages- Provides power for around 1 million UK homes, Hornsea Project 1 create 2000 jobs
Biomass
Advantages- Cars running on biofuel emit 80% less CO2 than petrol cars
Disadvantages- Causes deforestation e.g. in Brazil, combats reducing emissions and reinforces rural inequalities (TNCs inflate land price and take away farmland)
Nuclear
Advantages- No emissions
Disadvantage- More expensive than most renewables, still requires large amounts of initial energy for turbine, can be unsafe e.g. Fukishima disaster
USA responsible for 30% global nuclear energy
