energy consumption in developed and developing countries Flashcards
7 reasons developed countries are consuming less energy
More efficient technology – energy saving and LED lightbulbs in the home and street lighting.
Population is decreasing or stagnant on developed countries so less demand.
Apps on phones to control heating and lighting use less energy.
Education about climate change and energy consumption is better in schools and in the media.
Less heavy industry (steel) and more service industries (banking) which use less energy.
EU regulations on emissions (CO2),
Cars are more efficient – start/stop technology, smaller engines use less fuel.
6 reasons developing countries are consuming more energy
They are becoming wealthier so people can buy more appliances (TVs, washing machines). In China in 1995 there were 8 air conditioning units per 100 households. In 2009 there were 106 units per 100 households.
More heavy industries such as shipbuilding which use huge amounts of energy.
Car ownership is rising. In 2003 in India 600,000 new vehicles were sold. In 2010 2,300,000 new vehicles were sold.
Using more resources such as coal and oil – to make electricity and to power factories to export goods to developed countries and to sell to their own population.
Farming is becoming more commercial so more machinery and fertilisers and pesticides are being used which consume more energy.
More houses are now on the electrical grid so people can have lighting and kitchen appliances.
