Q

paris climate agreement

A

Aim to keep the global average temperature to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Limitations:
Out of the 128 countries to have submitted new NDC (nationally determined contributions) targets, 12 did not increase ambition.

Q

cop26

A

Aim to continue limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5C. This should be guided by the overarching goals produced from cop26, of mitigation, adaptation and loss and damage, finance, and collaboration.

Limitations:
Without international collaboration, the transition to net zero global emissions could be delayed by decades. The costs of critical low carbon technologies could be significantly lower in a fast global transition, which can only be achieved by the collective action of many countries

Q

scotlands climate change policies

A

Sets a target date for net zero emissions of all greenhouse gases by 2045 through reducing greenhouse gas emission, decarbonisation in the public sector, encouraging people to move towards low carbon living, and more.

Limitations:
Since the Scottish Climate Change Act became law in 2009, the Scottish Government has failed to achieve 7 of the 11 legal targets. Plans to de- carbonise transport in Scotland are falling behind other parts of the UK.

Q

individual actions

A

Reducing impact on the environment by saving energy at home, changing your home’s source of energy, walking, biking or taking public transport, or switching to an electric vehicle are all valid solutions.

Limitations:
Making these small changes only has so much effect, as its the big businesses and corporations around the world using the most energy and emitting the most carbon emissions

Q

thames flood barrier

A

The series of gates can be raised across the river to prevent sea water flooding London. They have successfully protected London from flooding on numerous occasions.

Limitations:
A second barrier may be needed to cope with flooding beyond 2070. Advanced warning systems need to be further developed to advise householders of the potential risks of flooding.

Q

public transport projects

A

People could be encouraged to use public transport, walk or cycle, or use hybrid or electric cars to cut down on fossil fuel consumption for transport.

Limitations:
There is not the necessary infrastructure in place for electric vehicles
