edin housing- impacts Flashcards
comprehensive redevelopment
tenements identified as being unfit for habitation were demolished and replaced with tower blocks that provided larger, better heated, and equipped living spaces
Construction of suburban housing estates
worst of the slums were demolished through this programme in the 50/60s and replaced with large housing estates to properly house the overflow of people from Leith
these spaces offered much more open space than the inner city and the same benefits of comprehensive redevelopment
Renovation through “Gentrification”
an area known for its deprivation, crime, drug abuse and unemployment began gentrification in the 90s with wealthy people moving in, and remaining tenements in poor conditions were renovated and modernised
shopping centres were built bringing in more people to the town and therefore money, and local businesses benefited from increased trade from the victoria quay workers (such as sandwich shops)
new towns
new towns like livingston and glenrothes were built to house the overflow of people from edinburgh with the intent of making them a nice place people could live/work and relax
these suburban housing estates offered much larger, nicer housing and the same benefits of comprehensive redevelopment
regeneration projects
PARC is an urban regeneration company that rebuilds/renovates historic buildings in the craigmillar area and have found success doing this as communities have been involved in the planning of the redevelopment (reviving community spirit therefore lowering ant social behavior) and business centres being built providing new employment opportunities
