edin transport- strategies Flashcards
Reduce the number of cars parked on city centre streets
Pay and Display/Parking Attendants —
All streets in the CBD are metered parking zones. Due to heavy demand
In George St costs are high 50p for 8 Minutes, up to £3.60 per hour for a maximum of three hours
Parking attendants patrol the CBD ensuring fares have been paid.
Multi story car parks have been built e.g. OMNI centre which has space for 1000 cars and charges £16 per day
Improved Public Transport
Park and Ride - Edinburgh has five park and ride locations run by Lothian Buses, around the edge of the city
Improve Buses- Lothian Buses continues to increase it’s passenger numbers (carrying more than twice the national average for bus use) by developing a better and more frequent bus service
Trams - A direct tram route runs from Edinburgh Airport to CBD (30min travel time) and connects with the Glasgow to Edinburgh railway line at Edinburgh Park or Haymarket Railway Stations
Improve cycle access
The development of new cycle routes, encourages more sustainable travel (in Edinburgh between 33% and 50% of all commuter journeys are between 1 and 3 miles)
Use of bypass to remove “through” traffic
A720 Edinburgh City By-Pass It is a dual carriage way route that takes east/west through traffic and routes it south of the city, avoiding the CBD (and reducing congestion in the city)
