Energy chapter 5 Flashcards
Energy
the ability to do work or cause change
heat energy
fire, friction
sound energy
thunder, doorbell
electromagnetic energy
sunlight, microwave, ultraviolet light
chemical energy
battery, wood, match, coal, gasoline, food
electrical energy
lightning, generator
mechanical energy
gasoline, engine, windmill
nuclear energy
radioactive elements, sun and stars
the law of conservation of energy
energy is never destroyed, it can be transferred/ converted, but the total amount never changes
kinetic energy
the energy of motion. depends on mass and speed
equation for kinetic energy
=1/2mv^2 (J)
potential energy
stored due to an objects position and has potential to change
elastic potential energy
stored by something that can stretch or compress
chemical potential energy
stored in chemical bonds between atoms, released when the bonds are broken
gravitational potential energy
stored by objects due to their positions above earths surface. can be increased by increasing height above ground.
