Energy Changes PAPER 1 Flashcards
What is an electrolyte?
A liquid where ions can move freely
What is an electrode?
Metal that can conduct electricity
What metals are less reactive than carbon? (Displacement)
Iron
Zinc
Copper
Gold
Which metals are more reactive than carbon?
Magnesium
Calcium
Sodium
Potassium
The ______ the difference in reactivity of electrodes, the ______ the voltage produced
Bigger, greater
What is an alkaline battery?
A non rechargeable battery
Why are some batteries non rechargeable?
Because the reactants (electrodes and electrolyte) get used up
How do fuel cells produce electricity?
By using fuel and oxygen where the fuel is oxdised electrochemically.
What are hydrogen fuel cells?
Fuel cells which use hydrogen as a fuel
What are the disadvantages to hydrogen fuel cells? (2)
Expensive
Highly flammable
What is an advantage to using hydrogen fuel cells?
Dont produce pollutants instead water
What are the disadvantages and advantages to alkali cells?
Cheap
Not environmentally friendly (go to landfill)
What is an endothermic reaction?
When energy is taken in from surroundings
What is an exothermic reaction?
When energy is released to surroundings
What is a redox reaction?
When oxidation and reduction occur at the same time
