Energetics Flashcards
What is an exothermic reaction?
a reaction that:
- transfers thermal energy to the surroundings
- leading to an increase in the temperature of the surroundings
What is an endothermic reaction?
a reaction that:
- takes in thermal energy from the surroundings
- leading to a decrease in the temperature of the surroundings
What is enthalpy change?
the transfer of thermal energy during a reaction
What is the enthalpy change in an ENDOTHERMIC reaction?
positive - takes in thermal energy from surroundings
What is the enthalpy change in an EXOTHERMIC reaction?
negative - loses energy to surroundings
What is activation energy?
the minimum energy that colliding particles must have to react
In endothermic reactions, are bonds made or broken?
bonds are broken
In exothermic reactions, are bonds made or broken?
bonds are made
Does bond breaking release or take in energy?
takes in (needs energy to break bonds)
Reaction taking in energy:
endothermic
Reaction giving out energy:
exothermic
Endothermic reactions ______ heat.
absorb
Exothermic reactions ______ heat.
release
