What are the advantages of VP endoscopy relative to fluoroscopy?
Can be performed repeatedly, can be performed by SLP, can be done at speech clinic, less expensive, better clarity, no radiation
What is the technical name for using endoscopy to look at the nasopharynx?
Nasopharyngoscopy
What equipment is needed for nasopharyngoscopy?
At least a scope and a light source. Ideally also a camera for the score, an external mic., and a monitor for viewing
What age can nasopharyngoscopy be used with children?
As young as 3 (need to be able to repeat short sentences without crying)
What should be completed prior to the procedure?
Giving the client info (for kids can be coloring pages), performing perceptual evaluation to guide what is tested during endoscopy, infection control, use of nasal anesthesia/ decongestant
What are the advantages of flexible fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy?
Better view of lateral walls,
can view angle of levator attachment.
Minimally invasive, more widely available, less expensive
Which procedure is used most frequently?
Nasopharyngoscopy used much more than videofluoroscopy
