1+, 2+, 3+, 4+
What effect can enlarged tonsils have in the mouth?
muffled resonance, may make tongue postured down and forward
Does surgery for enlarged palatine tonsils usually impact speech?
No effect or positive effect
What are the adenoids?
AKA pharyngeal tonsils
Where are the adenoids?
back wall of nasopharynx, above level of oral cavity (can’t see when look in mouth)
What can result from enlarged adenoids?
may block eustachian tube orifice, may cause hypernasality or NAE
When might adenoids be surgically removed?
enlarged with sleep apnea (75%), recurrent otitis media in children 4 and older, recurrent sinusitis
What are possible complications for speech after an adenoidectomy?
Temporary hypernasality (up to 50%), permanent resonance disorder due to VPD=1/1500
What are risk factors for VPD?
cleft or family history of cleft, submucous cleft, history of nasal regurgitation or sucking difficulty, history of neuromotor dysfunction, moderate-severe phonological delay, marginal VP function
