Endodontic Disease Overview Flashcards
what is endodontics
study of the clinical science of normal dental pulp, the aetiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries of the dental pulp along with associated peri radicular condition
what diseases are under the endodontics branch
pulpal disease
apical disease
serious odontogenic infection
other non endodontic diseases
what is dental pulp
unmineralised tissue composed of soft connective tissue, vascular, lymphatic and nervous elements that occupies the central pulp cavity of each tooth.
it is soft tissue encase in hard tissue
what is apical disease
acute or chronic inflammatory lesion around the apex of the tooth root, which is caused by bacterial invasion of the pulp of the tooth
what is dental caries
destruction of the dental hard tissue by acid produced by the bacteria utilising dietary sugar and time
describe abscesses
can be acute or chronic
happens quickly and leads to an accumulation of pus when acute
chronic apical abscesses happen slowly
warning signs of abscesses
malaise
fever
cellulitis
lymphadenopathy
progressive swelling
what is a dental abscess
a localised collection of pus that forms the inside of teeth or gums which essentially initiate from bacterial infection
describe radicular cysts
arises from cell rests of malassez in the periodontal ligament usually in response to inflammation after pulp death
what are some severe complications of endodontic disease
pulmonary pleural
retropharyngeal
intracranial infections
