Endocrinology Flashcards
What is endocrinology?
The study of horomones
Where are endocrine hormones secreted from, via and to?
Endocrine hormones are secreted from endocrine glands, via the blood to distant tissue
Where are neuro-endocrine hormones secreted from, via and to?
Neuro-endocrine hormones are secreted from nervous tissue, via the blood to distant tissue
Where are neuro-paracrine hormones secreted from, via and to?
Neuro-paracrine hormones are secreted from neuron cell, via the synapse to neighboring cells
Where are paracrine hormones secreted from, via and to?
Paracrine hormones are secreted from cells, via intestitial fluid to the same cell
Where are pheromone hormones secreted from, via and to?
Pheromones are secreted from animals, via the external environment to other animals
How are hormones regulated?
By hormones
State several hormone actions
Morphological change, accelerated cell division, alter gene expression, alter the rate of protein synthesis, stimulate smooth muscle contraction, affect exocrine secretions, control endocrine secretions, regulate membrane permeability, affect behaviour
Hormone interactions of the same tissue can be one of four different types, what are they?
Additive, synergistic, non-additive or permissive
What are the four different classes of hormone?
Steroids, proteins, amines and fatty acid derivatives
Which class of hormone is produced by the stepwise conversion of cholesterol?
Steroid hormones
Which glands are steroids released from?
adrenal glands (and gonads)
