Type 1 Diabetes Patho
mediated by the immune system
causes pancreatic B-cell destruction
most commonly dx in children or young adults
incidence- 5-10% of all cases of diabetes
Type 2 diabetes patho
the result of resistance to insulin
inability of the pancreas to increase
insulin production to compensate for this resistance
Gestational diabetes
Diabetes diagnosed in the second or third trimester of pregnancy, that is not clearly overt or preexisting to the pregnancy diabetes
Other types of diabetes
Diabetes due to other causes such as cystic fibrosis, pancreatic disease and drug-induced or chemically induced.
HA1C: glycemic goals following treatment
<7.0%
Fasting plasma glucose following treatment
80-130
2 hour plasma glucose following treatment
<180 mg.dL 2 hour postmeal
Positive DM
HA1C > or = 6.5%
Fasting plasma glucose > or = 126
2 hour plasma glucose > or = 200 after a 75 g glucose load
Most common cause of hypothyroidism
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
autoimmune disorder
Dx with Antibody tests- thyroid peroxidase antibodies
