Endocrine Vocab Flashcards
Female gonads that secrete estrogen and progesterone
Ovaries
Hormone secreted by the neurohypophysis which stimulates the reabsorption of water by the kidneys and large intestine
ADH (antidouretic hormone)
Portion of the hypophysis which secretes 6 different hormones and is controlled chemically by the hypothalamus
Anterior pituitary
Endocrine gland which secretes hormones which effect the metabolic rate of the body and lowers the Ca++ levels of the blood
Thyroid
Chemicals synthesized and secreted by the hypothalamus which stimulates the anterior pituitary to secrete its various hormones
Releasing/inhibitory factors
Certain tissues or cells which possess recepto sites sensitive to a specific hormone which will produce strong physiological responses by this tissue or cell
Target tissue/cells
Gland that secretes its products through a gland
Exocrine gland
Hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis which stimulates the adrenal context to secretes its multitude of hormone
ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone)
A ductless gland which secrets ots products directly into the blodstream
Endocrine gland
Portion of the interbrain which links the nervous system to the endocrine system and controls almost all the endocrine glands by its secretion of releasing factors
Hypothalamus
Endocrine gland which secrets a hormone that increases blood Ca++ by stimulating osteoclast activity and lowers blood PO levels
Parathyroid
Thyroid hormone that causes increased energy output from carbohydrates and an increased rate of protein synthesis
thyroxin
Male gonadotropin which secretes testosterone
Testes
Hormone secreted by the posterior pituitary which cause contraction of the futures from child birth and ejection of milk from the pregnant female breast
Oxytocin
Hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary which causes development of the egg containing female ovart and supermarket production in the male testes
FSH
The position of the hypophysis that is under nervous control by the hypothalamus and secretes 2 hormones
Posterior gland
Sever swelling on the thyroid gland due to hypersecretion of the TSH or the lack of iodine in the diet
Goiter
Hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary which stimulates the enlargement of cells and or mitotic division of cells
GH
Hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis which stimulates the thyroid to secrete its hormone
TSH
Hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary which stimulates sex hormone secretion by the gonads and the release of the egg containing follicle of the female ovary
LH
Hormone secreted by the thyroid that lowers the Ca++ levels by stimualting osteoblast activity to produce new bone which stores the Ca++ in the bones
Calcitonin (Ca+)
Condition in which GH continue to be secreted after growth plate closure of the bone resulting in abnormal bone growth and increased growth of certain parts of the body
Acromeglay
Condition in which the thyroid hormones are not being secreted at birth or shortly after which if allowed to continue result in permanent mental/brain impairment
Cretinism
Condition in which insulin secretion is diminished or not recognized by cells or is totally absent resulting in serious or fatal metabolic conditions
Diabetes mellitus
Condition in which ADH is not produced or secreted by the posterior pituitary gland resulting in extremely large quantities of urine being produced and the dehydration associated with it
Diabetes insipidous
