Endocrine - terminology Flashcards
Glands - Secretes their hormones directly into the bloodstream
endocrine
Glands- Send chemical substances (via ducts) to the outside of the body (tears, sweat, milk, saliva)
Exocrine Glands
Location - 4 small glands on the posterior of the thyroid gland
Parathyroid Gland
Location - scrotal sac of the male
Testes
Location - either side of the trachea
thyroid gland
Location - on top of each kidney
adrenal glands
Location - female abdomen
ovaries
location - near, and partly behind the stomach
pancreas
Location - central portion of the brain
pineal gland
Location - sella turcica, located at the base of the brain
pituitary gland
Signals transmitted from this, control the secretions of the pituitary gland
hypothalamus
2 parts of the pituitary gland
anterior pituitary and posterior pituitary
Secretes Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and Oxytocin
Posterior lobe of the pituitary gland
Secretes growth hormone (GH) (somatotropin)
thyroid-stimulating hormone (TH)
Anterior lobe of the pituitary gland
Secretes adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
Gonadotropins (FSH and LH)
Prolactin (PRL)
anterior lobe of the pituitary gland
Secretes T4 and T3, and calcitonin
thyroid
secretes parathyroid hormone (PTH)
parathyroids
Secretes insulin, glucagon
pancreas islet cells
Secretes estrogens and progesterones
ovaries
secretes testosterone
testes
secretes cortisol, aldosterone, androgens, estrogens
Adrenal cortex
Secretes epinephrine, and norepinephrine
adrenal medulla
mineral salt found in blood and tissue
electrolyte
Hormone secreted by the thyroid gland that increases cell metabolism
T4 - tyroxine
secreted by the alpha islet of the pancreas and increases blood sugar
glucagons
secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland and stimulates egg production and sperm production
follicle-stimulating hormone
stimulates ovulation, and testosterone secretion
LH lutenizing hormone
Secreted by the anterior lobe of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; stimulates growth of bones and soft tissue
GH - growth hormone (somatotropin)
