Endocrine System - Thyroid Flashcards
Location of the Thyroid
Located at the base of the neck, below the trachea
The Thyroid produces THYROXINE, what is Thyroxine?
The thyroxine speeds up the rate of metabolism for carbs, proteins and fats.
What happens when there is hypersecretion of thyroxine?
Overproduction of thyroxine, leads to oxidizing sugars and other nutrients at FASTER rates.
Symptoms of Hypersecretion of Thyroxine and a Treatment
1.) Feel warm, because 50% of glucose is being oxidized, tend to not gain weight, bulging eyes due to swelling of muscles around the eyes.
2.) Permanently cured with radioactive iodide
Define Hyposecretion of Thyroxine
Underproduction of thyroxine, person does not oxidize nutrients quickly. Excess blood sugar will get converted to glycogen and once full, it will get stored as fat.
Symptoms and Treatment of Hyposecretion
Symptoms: Intolerant to cold, dry skin, less active. Treatment: Synthetic thyroxine tablets
What is Cretinism?
The lack of thyroxine from birth due to a missing thyroid gland.
What is a goiter?
Swelling of the neck due to an enlargement of the thyroid gland
What hormone does the thyroid produce?
Calcitonin, a hormone that regulates calcium levels in blood.
