Endocrine System - Pituitary Gland Flashcards
Why is the Pituitary Gland called the “Master Gland”
It controls other endocrine glands and produces some.
Describe the Pituitary Gland
Pituitary Gland is a small sac-like gland, that is located in the brain under the hypothalamus.
Function of the Posterior Pituitary
1.) Stores and Releases ADH and Oxytocin which is produced by the hypothalamus
What does ADH stand for and its functions?
ADH stands for Anti-Diuretic Hormone.
The functions of ADH:
1.) Act on the kidneys to increase H2O/water reabsorption
2.) Leads to more concentrated urine being produced because of conserving the H2O (take it from urine, put into blood)
Functions of Oxytocin
CONTRACTION HORMONE
1.) Initiates strong uterine contractions during labor
2.) Promotes the movement of milk into breasts during breastfeeding
Anterior Pituitary’s Function
Produces hormones
How does the Anterior Pituitary work with the Hypothalamus
The Trophic Hormones are released through the nerve ends of the hypothalamus
What hormones are released from the Anterior Pituitary? HINT 3 MAIN ONES
1.) TSH - Thyroid Secreting Hormone
2.) ACTH - Adrenocortitrophic Hormone
3.) hGH - Human Growth Hormone
TSH’s Function
Stimulates thyroid glands to release thyroxine (T4), which is responsible for metabolism.
ACTH’s Function
Stimulates the adrenal cortex and releases cortisol and aldosterone
hGh’s Function
Promotes growth of long bones, cell division and muscle growth
