Endocrine System - Pancreas Flashcards
What makes the Pancreas different than other glands?
The pancreas has both endocrine glands and exocrine glands.
Why is the pancreas considered partly exocrine?
It is considered partly exocrine because some cells produce and secrete digestive enzymes through a duct to the small intenstine.
Why is the pancreas partly endocrine?
Because some cells produce hormones
The hormone producing cells in the pancreas are called…
Islets of Langerhans.
Two types of Islet Cells
Alpha: Secretes glucagon to increase blood sugar
Beta: Secretes insulin to decrease blood sugar
Islet Cells produce two hormones…
1.) Insulin Beta cells/decrease blood sugar
2.) Glucagon Alpha cells/increase blood sugar
Glucagon Functions
1.) released when blood sugar levels are low (after fasting/exercising)
2.) stimulates glycogen back into glucose (from liver), then gets reabsorbed by the blood.
Insulin Functions
1.) Puts glucose into storage as glycogen in the liver
2.) Makes cells more permeable to glucose
3.) Released after eating meals
Insulin and Glucagon are an….
Antagonist Pair meaning they are hormones that work in opposition to one another.
