Endocrine System And Hormones Flashcards
What is the endocrine system?
A system of glands that releases hormones into the bloodstream
What is the pituitary gland?
Found in the brain and it produces hormones that effect the body and other glands
What is blood glucose concentration?
The amount of glucose in the bloodstream
What organ detects a high blood glucose level and what is the response?
The pancreas detects a high glucose level and it releases insulin which causes the glucose to move into cells. It is then made into glycogen in muscles and liver for storage
What organ detects low blood glucose concentration and what does it do in response?
The pancreas detects low glucose conc and produces the hormone glucagon that causes stored glycogen to turn into glucose and be released into the blood
What is type 1 diabetes?
Disorder where the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin. It is treated with insulin injections and can be characterised by high blood glucose levels
What is type 2 diabetes?
A disorder where body cells no longer respond to insulin. Can be treated with a carb controlled diet and an exercise regime. Obesity is a common risk factor
What is the thyroid?
It produces thyroxine which regulates the basal rate of metabolism
What is TSH?
TSH is released from the pituitary gland when the levels of thyroxine in the blood are too low and it will stimulate the thyroid gland to make more
What happens when there is too much thyroxine in the blood?
It will inhibit the pituitary gland from producing TSH so levels go back to normal
