Endocrine system Flashcards
What are the parts of the anterior pituitary gland?
- Pars distalis
- Pars tuberalis
- Pars intermedius
What are the parts of the posterior pituitary gland?
- Pars nervosa
- Infundibulum
What are the cells present in the anterior pituitary gland and the hormones secreted by them?
- Somatotrophs (~50%): Growth hormone (GH)
- Lactotrophs (~20%): Prolactin
- Corticotrophs (~20%): Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)
- Thyrotrophs (~5%): Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
- Gonadotrophs (~5%): LH and FSH
What are the hormones secreted by the posterior pituitary gland?
- ADH
2. Oxytocin
What structure connects the posterior pituitary to the hypothalamus?
Pituitary stalk
What are the types of cells present in the anterior pituitary gland?
- Chromophobes
2. Chromophils
What are the structures present in the posterior pituitary gland?
- Axons
2. Pituicytes
What are the types of cells found in the parathyroid glands?
- Chief cells (secretes PTH)
2. Oxyphil cells
What types of cells make up thyroid follicles?
Cuboidal cells (columnar when stimulated)
What other cell type is present in thyroid glands?
C (parafollicular) cells
What are the layers of the adrenal cortex and their secretions?
- Zona glomerulosa: Mineralocorticoids (e.g. aldosterone)
- Zona fasciculata: Glucocorticoids (e.g. cortisol)
- Zona reticularis: Androgens
