Endocrine System Flashcards
What does Hypo mean?
Less
How does the endocrine system communicate?
Hormones in blood
How long does the endocrine system take?
Very slow
What is the duration of the endocrine system?
Long lasting
What does the endocrine system do?
Changes in metabolic activity
How are hormones regulated?
Negative feedback
Define tropic hormone
Hormone that targets another gland
What do hormones control?
- Rate of metabolism
- blood sugar conc.
- Blood pressure (water content)
- Minerals conc. (Blood)
- Reproduction
- Growth + Repair
What are exocrine glands?
Excrete products that leave the body
What are endocrine glands?
Secrete hormones into bloodstream
What are water soluble hormones?
Protein hormones
- bind to receptor site outside cell
- sends signal into cell
What are fat soluble hormones?
Steroid hormones
- Diffuse into cell
- bind to receptor site inside
T/F: special neurons make hormones in the hypothalamus
True
What does the posterior pituitary serve as?
Storage for hormones
What does posterior pituitary release?
- Anti-diuretic (ADH)
- Oxytocin
T/F: Anterior pituitary makes own hormones
True
What does the anterior pituitary release?
- TSH
- ACTH (adrenocorticotropic)
- hGH
- FSH (follicle)
- LH (luteinizing)
- PRL (Prolactin)
What is the Islets of Langerhans?
Specialized hormone producing cells
What do beta and alpha cells produce respectively?
- insulin
- glucagon
Does liver convert glucose into glycogen?
Yes
What does insulin do to glucose?
- taken up by muscle for cell resp.
- Converted to Fat (adipose tissue)
What does insulin target?
Muscles, liver, fat
What does glucagon do?
- Raise sugar levels
- liver cells break down glycogen to glucose (some from adipose)
