15
Q

What are the radiographic signs of acromegaly?

A

-Enlarged sinuses-Especially the frontal sinuses
-Thicker, denser skull bones (frontal bossing)-Cave man appearance
-Expansion/erosion of sella turcica-Because tumor is often there
-Joint space widening
-Scalloping of posterior vertebral bodies-also seen in achondroplasia (because it affects the normal shape of the vertebral bodies)
-Early degenerative changes
-Thick heel pads (>23mm)

16
Q

What is Hypopituitarism

A

-Decreased secretion of pituitary hormones and a generalized decrease in bone growth and maturation if present before puberty

17
Q

What is the majority of hypopituitarism cases caused by?

A

Majority caused by pituitary tumours-Macroadenomas

18
Q

What causes cushing syndrome?

A

Chronic exposure to excessive glucocorticoids
1.Adrenal hyperplasia-Adrenal glands enlarged because there are too many cells
2.Excessive steroid administration
3.Secretory tumours

19
Q

What are the Signs/Symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome?

A

-Increased blood lipid levels
-Truncal Obesity
-Moon-shaped face
-Fat pad between shoulders
-Hypertension
-Osteoporosis

20
Q

What is the best for seeing tumours causing cushing’s syndrome?

A

-Tumour seen best w/ MRI

21
Q

What modality is best for seeing enlargement of adrenal glands?

A

CT, MRI, or US

22
Q

How do the adrenal glands appear with cushing’s syndrome in axial slices?

A

Y-shaped in axial slices

23
Q

What are the treatments for Cushing’s syndrome?

A

Depends on cause
-Surgery or radiation for tumours
-Possible adrenalectomy

24
Q

What is Hyperthyroidism?

A

Excessive thyroid hormone production

25
Q

What pathologies cause excessive thyroid hormone production

A

1.Graves disease
2.Toxic adenomas
3.Painless thyroiditis

26
Q

What is Graves Disease?

A

Autoimmune-antibodies attack it but then the thyroid takes it and makes more thyroid hormone-seen with hyperthyroidism

27
Q

What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism?

A

-Nervousness, inability to sleep, tremors, tachycardia
-Palpitations, excessive sweating,
-Heat intolerance, weight loss, exophthalmos
-May be asymptomatic

28
Q

What is exophthalmos?

A

Creates edema behind the eyes

29
Q

How does grave’s disease appear in Nuclear medicine?

A

Enlarged, hyperactive thyroid gland

30
Q

What type of contrast is given for grave’s disease in nuclear imaging?

A

Give them radioactive iodine

31
Q

What is hypothyroidism?

A

Failure of thyroid to produce sufficient thyroid hormone

32
Q

What are the Causes of hypothyroidism?

A

-Primary gland failure
-Insufficient gland stimulation
-Infantile hypothyroidism (cretinism)-children

33
Q

T/F

Infantile hypothyroidism (cretinism) causes developmental issues

34
Q

T/F

In adult hypothyroidism treatment for hyperthyroidism can cause hypothyroidism sometimes

35
Q

How does hypothyroidism appear radiographically in children?

A

-Delayed bone growth in children (primarily skull)

36
Q

How does hypothyroidism appear radiographically in both children and adults?

A

-Possible pericardial effusion, adynamic ileus in adults

37
Q

How does hypothyroidism appear in Ultrasound for both children and adults?

A

-Abnormal size or blood flow
