Endocrine System Flashcards
What is a gland
An organ that produces secretions which produced by specialized cells in glands
Endocrine gland
A ductless gland that carry hormones from glands to various part of the body tissue by blood and lymph
Exocrine gland
A tube or duct gland that carry secretions from gland to the body
Ex. Saliva, milk sweat, pancreases and stomach
Purpose of hormone
It is a chemical messenger manufactured by endocrine gland.
The main function is to regulate activity of various body organs
3 Stimuli of hormone secretion
1.Blood level of various non hormone chemicals stimulates the release of hormones
2.some hormones can stimulate the release of other particular hormones
3.stimulus from nervous system can stimulate the release of hormones from endocrine gland
Nervous vs. Endocrine
Nervous: based on the communication with various body parts nervous are faster that endocrine cuz they travel in a blood stream and are not rapidly transferred.
The same function as through hypothalamus in the brain.
Relationship of hypothalamus and pituitary
ACTHR
TSRH
GnRH
GHRH
Prolactin
Oxytocin
Hormone released from hypothalamus gland and travel through posterior pituitary gland and released in the blood and which function in reproductive system.
Cause strong contractions of smooth muscle of the uterus of a pregnant woman during labour.
Let down reflex for milk when an infant is nursing mother’s breast milk.
It makes contraception of breast muscles
ADH antidiuretic hormone
Cause increase the amount of water reabsorbed in the kidneys
