Endocrine system Flashcards
process of secretion of hormones
secreting cell–>blood—> target cell/tissue
how are endocrine glands controlled?
hormonal stimulas; low concentration hormones in blood triggers the stimulas of hormones
Neuralstimulas
nerves release hormones
Hormonal stimulas
release of one hormone release triggers the release of another hormone
Pituitary gland
Anterior; growth hormone
Posterior; oxytocin
Acromegaly
over secretion of growth hormone in adults increase of facial hair, hands, feet bones or dwarfism
Pineal Gland
Endocrine organ that secrets melatonin
Pancreas
islet of langerhan cells; alfa cells beta cells
Alfa cells
secret glucagon= increase blood sugar
Beta Cell
secret insulin= decrease blood sugar
Type 1 diabetes
immune system attack beta cells, can’t drive sugar into muscles and stays in blood increasing blood sugar and muscle function (need insulin shots)
Type 2 diabetes
body still makes insulin but cells do not respond driving blood sugar up, pump body with a bunch of insulin to force the cells to respond
Parathyroid
Detect if calcium is really low will look through your body to get calcium; bones, kidneys= can lead to osteoporosis
Adrenal glands
secret cortisol(stress) increase the blood sugar baseline in blood
Hypercortsalism
rapid developmen of stretch marks because body is taking proteins from skin= damage decrease fat breakage blood sugar increases= sugar turning into storage which increases fat
