What does the pituitary gland do?
What does the anterior pituitary gland secrete?
What does the posterior pituitary gland secrete?
Secretes hormones into the bloodstream.
- GH, TSH, ACTH, LH, FSH, prolactin
- oxytocin, ADH
What are the S/Sx of hypopituitarism?
- short stature
- hypoglycemia
- lethergy
- gonadal failure
- vision problems
- diabetes insipidus (posterior lobe)
- low bone density
What are the S/Sx of hyperpituitarism?
- gigantism or acromegaly
- excessive sweating
- muscle weakness
- lethergy
- hirsutism
What are the drugs used for hypopituitarism?
- GH (somatropin)
- DDAVP (desmopressin)
What is somatropin?
A synthetic version of GH that plays a role in bone, muscle, and organ growth;RBC mass; transport of fluids and electrolytes.
What are the AE associated with somatropin?
- fluid retention (edema)
- muscle and joint pain
What is DDAVP?
A synthetic version of AVP (ADH) that acts on V2 receptors to increase the water reabsorbed by AQP channels.
What are the AE associated with DDAVP?
- dry mouth
- hyponatremia
What are the drugs used for hyper pituitarism?
None, usually treated with surgery.
-May use somatostatin analogue or GH receptor antagonist to as an adjunct medication.
What does the adrenal gland do?
