Endocrine/Reproductive drugs Flashcards
Name the ductless glands that compose the endocrine system
pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, ovaries, testicles, pancreas, and kidneys.
The difference between exogenous and endogenous
Exogenous are not naturally produced by the body while endogenous is naturally produced by the body.
What is the master gland and what is it controlled by?
Pituitary gland and is controlled by the hypothalamus
Nam the two lobes of the pituitary gland
Adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis
What do indirect acting hormones do?
It is a hormone released by one organ to act on another organ to release another hormone in order to achieve desired effect.
What do direct hormones do?
Act directly on organ to secrete a hormone.
Name the two hormones of the posterior pituitaty gland .
oxytocin and vasopressin
Name the five tropic hormones released by the anterior lobe.
TSH( thyroid-stimulating hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (Luteiniizing hormone) GH (Growth hormone) ACTH (amino chrono tropic hormone)
What does the FSH do?
Promotes ovarian follicle growth and spermatogenesis
What does LH do?
Promotes ovulation and testosterone production
What does GH do?
Accelerates the body growth and milk production
What does the ACTH do?
produces corticosteriods by the adrenal cortex
How does the feedback mechanism work?
Senses the plasma level of a particular hormone which controls the activity of the gland that produces it.
How does positive feedback work?
If there is low plasma levels of a hormone, the release of the appropriate releasing factor increases which increases the release or production of that hormone
How does negative feedback work?
High plasma levels of a hormone are sensed by the hypothalamus which reduces the amount of the appropriate release factor, which in turns lowers the amount of the hormone.
What does the neurohormonal reflex do?
Releases oxytocin by the posterior pituitary gland.
How is the neurohormonal reflex initiated?
Stimulate the udder of a nursing calf, parturition, milk production, and milking.
Name the four stages of the reproductive system
Proestrus, estrus, diestrus, and anestrus
Causes the release of LH and FSH to cause ovulation?
Gonadtropins
Hormone given to suppress estrus and treat pseudocyisis (false pregnancies)
Progestins
Drug used to cause forceful uterine contractions to aid in delivery of a fetus and to deliver the placenta.
Oxytocin
Hormone responsible for milk letdown
Oxytocin
