Endocrine Drugs Flashcards
What system is responsible for the collection of glands and tissues that secrete hormones into the bloodstream?
Endocrine System
What organ is responsible for the secretion of digestive enzymes and releasing of insulin and glucagon from the Islets of Langerhans?
Pancreas
What are the three (3) types of hormones?
Peptide Hormones, Steroid Hormones, and Amine Hormones
What are the adverse effects of oxytocin?
Hypersensitivity, Cardiovascular Spasm, Hypotension, and Nausea and Vomiting
It produces the hormones called corticosteroids
Adrenal Cortex
It releases the neurotransmitters Norepinephrine and Epinephrine
Adrenal Medulla
It is used to promote lung maturation in premature infants
Glucocorticoids
It is used to diagnose Cushing’s Syndrome and treatment of non-endocrine disorders
Dexamethasone
What is the preferred drug for adrenocortical insufficiency?
Hydrocortisone
What organ is responsible for the regulation of the rate of metabolism?
Thyroid
What is Diabetes Mellitus?
Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders or fat, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism that results from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action (sensitivity) or both
What are the three (3) criteria when diagnosing a Diabetes?
- Fasting plasma glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL
- 2-hour value from a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test ≥ 200 mg/dL
- Casual plasma glucose level of ≥ 200 mg/dL with symptoms of diabetes
It is one of the principal fuels used by our body
Glucose
What type of insulin should we expect a peak effect of 1 to 5 hour after administration?
Regular Insulin
What are the different types of insulin?
- Rapid-Acting Insulin
- Short-Acting Insulin
- Intermediate-Acting Insulin
- Long-Acting Insulin
