Autonomous Nervous System Drugs Flashcards
Epinephrine
Epinephrine also called as adrenaline,
is a hormone and neurotransmitter used to treat allergic reactions, to restore cardiac rhythm, and to control mucosal congestion, glaucoma, and asthma.
Pseudoephedrine
It is an alpha and beta adrenergic agonist used to treat nasal and sinus congestion, as well as allergic rhinitis.
Isoprenaline
It is a catecholamine non-selective beta-adrenergic agonist typically used to treat bradycardia and heart block.
Dobutamine
It is a beta-1 agonist used to treat cardiac decompensation in patients with organic heart disease or from cardiac surgery.
Salbutamol
It is a beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist used to treat asthma, bronchitis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), as well as prevent exercise induced bronchospasms.
Phentolamine
It is a nonselective alpha-adrenergic antagonist used to reverse soft tissue anesthesia.
Tamsulosin
It is an alpha-1A and alpha-1B adrenergic receptor antagonist used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, ureteral stones, prostatitis, and female voiding dysfunction.
Timolol
It is a non-selective beta adrenergic blocker used in the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure in ocular hypertension or open angle glaucoma.
Pindolol
It is a beta adrenoceptor antagonist used to treat hypertension, edema, ventricular tachycardias, and atrial fibrillation.
Propanolol
It is a non-selective beta adrenergic antagonist used to treat hypertension, angina, atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarction, migraine, essential tremor, hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, and pheochromocytoma.
Atropine
It is a muscarinic antagonist used to treat poisoning by muscarinic agents, including organophosphates and other drugs.
Oxybutynin
It is an antimuscarinic agent that reduces detrusor muscle activity, relaxing the bladder and preventing the urge to void.
Benzatropine
It is an anticholinergic drug used to treat Parkinson’s disease (PD) and extrapyramidal symptoms, except tardive dyskinesia.
Edrophonium
It is a cholinesterase inhibitor used to diagnose and evaluate myasthenia gravis.
Physostigmine
It is a cholinesterase inhibitor used to treat glaucoma and anticholinergic toxicity.
Pyridostigmine
Itis a cholinesterase inhibitor used for symptomatic treatment of myasthenia gravis and congenital myasthenic syndromes and to reverse neuromuscular blockade by nondepolarizing muscle relaxants.
Acetylcholine
Itis a parasympathomimetic neurotransmitter used to induce miosis of the iris in seconds after delivery of the lens in cataract surgery, in penetrating keratoplasty, iridectomy and other anterior segment surgery where rapid miosis may be required.
Carbachol
Itis a direct acting miotic agent administered ophthalmically to decrease intraocular pressure after cataract surgery, and to induce miosis during surgery.
Pilocarpine
Itis a muscarinic cholinergic agonist used on the eye to treat elevated intraocular pressure, various types of glaucoma, and to induce miosis. Also available orally to treat symptoms of dry mouth associated with Sjogren’s syndrome and radiotherapy.
Bethanechol
It is a muscarinic agonist used to treat postoperative and postpartum nonobstructive functional urinary retention and neurogenic atony of the bladder with retention.
