Endocrine Drugs Flashcards
A chemical substance produced in the body that controls and regulates the activity of certain cells or organs.
HORMONES
It is used to initiate labor, promote delivery of placenta and control post-partum hemorrhage
OXYTOCIN
what are the adverse effect of Oxytocin?
hypersensitivity, cardiovascular spasm, hypotension, N&V
It releases neurotransmitters Norepinephrine and Epinephrine.
Adrenal Medulla
Adrenal Cortex produces hormones called?
CORTICOSTERIODS
It Increase the availability of glucose, Potent immunosuppressants used to prevent organ-transplant rejection and used to promote lung maturation in premature infants.
GLUCOCORTICOIDS
It used to diagnose Cushing’s syndrome and treatment of non-endocrine disorders .
Dexamethasone
An oral therapy for chronic adrenal insufficiency
Prednisone, Dexamethasone, Cortisone
It is a synthetic steroid identical to cortisol and preferred drug for adrenocortical insufficiency.
Hydrocortisone
It is a group of metabolic disorders of fat, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism that results from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action
Diabetes mellitus
it decreases glucose production by the liver; increase tissue response to insulin.
BIGUANIDES
It reduces rate starches are broken down and absorbed; decreases post-prandial rise in blood glucose.
ALPHA-GLUCOSIDAE INHIBITORS
It decrease insulin resistance, increase glucose uptake and decrease glucose production in liver
THIAZOLIDINEDIONES
It increases insulin release, reduces glucagon release
GLIPTINS
What is the Pharmacologic action of GLUCAGON?
It Increases blood glucose levels by increasing the breakdown of glycogen into glucose, decreasing glycogen synthesis enhances the synthesis of glucose.
