Endocrine disrupters Flashcards
Endocrine disruptors
Interferes with the action of a hormone (production, secretion, transport, metabolism, receptor binding, effect, excretion).
Potentially lead to epigenetic and transgenerational effects.
Examples
phthalates (plastics, glues, detergents, paint, drugs, food wraps, textiles, MEP-cosmetics)
BPA-plasticisers
parabens
dioxins
pesticides
PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances)
Drugs - paracetamol, aspirin, indomethicin (can interfere with testicular descent)
Reducing exposure
Animal and human epidemiological studies linked
Women:
Fibroids
Endometriosis
PCOS
DOR
POI
Infertility
Cancer
Boys:
Testicular cancer, cryptorchidims, reduced semen analysis
Difficulties in researching
Challenges with reporting data, what is prenatal, early or contemporary exposure, so many confounders, use of add-mixture measures.
Purely associations
Can have agonist, and antagonist effects
Do not follow standard dose response curves.
Difficulties studying effects over generations
