Endocrine Disorders Flashcards
Define and give examples of sign vs symptom
Sign: objective, can be measured (i.e. vital sign change)
Symptom: subjective, sensation by patient (i.e. headache)
What types of muscle disorders may occur with endocrine diseases
Muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, myalgia
What is Rhabdomyolysis
Injury to skeletal muscle results in loss of skeletal muscle integrity releasing intracellular components into extracellular space and blood
Causes of rhabdo
Traumatic injury, toxins, infections, muscle ischemia, metabolic disorders, genetic disorders, overexertion, prolonged bed rest
Signs and symptoms of rhabdo
Limb weakness, myalgia, swelling, tea colored urine (acute renal failure)
Individual with chronic deficiency in iodine will have what
Hypothyroidism
Elevated plasma TSH
Goiter
Disease associated with accelerated linear bone growth, insulin resistance-type 2 diabetes, and death of not treated
Gigantism - excess hGH
Accelerated bone growth
Disease associated with inability to maintain blood pressure and respond appropriately to situations of physiological stress
Addisons disease - adrenal insufficiency
Autoimmune disease
What change in vital signs is a sensitive indicator of possible hyperthyroidism
Tachycardia - elevated resting pulse rate over 100 bpm
