Endocrine disease Flashcards
List the factors that can cause endocrine disease and how they act
Hormone deficiency, hormone excess, hormone resistance (ineffective receptors)
List the approaches for treating hormone deficiency
Purify hormone, figure out how to administer and in what quantity, monitor clinical changes and post therapeutic hormone levels
Discuss the role of hormone excess in producing endocrine disease
hormone is overproduced by its gland or by tissue that is not an endocrine organ (tumor); endocrine gland tumors produce hormone in an unregulated manner
Discuss the effects of compounds such as anabolic steroids in terms of altering endocrine function
willful ingestion of exogenous hormones can be a cause of excess hormone
Define: Radioimmunoassay (RIA)
a radioisotope tracing technique that allows the measurement of tiny quantities of insulin and other biological substances in blood
Define: Hormone deficiency
endocrine problem often due to a destructive process in the gland in which the hormone is produced (ex.- infection, infarction, tumor, autoimmune attack, genetic defect); also caused by inactivating mutation of receptors
Define: Testicular feminization
endocrine disease where cells are unable to respond to androgen and therefore the fetus doesn’t develop male sexual traits
Define: Hormone excess
too much hormone is produced either by over-secretion by its designated gland or by tissue that is not an endocrine organ (endocrine gland tumor); ex.- hyperthyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome
Define: Hormone replacement
use of a purified or altered hormone to treat hormone deficiency; administered either orally or injected; ex.- Insulin use in diabetes mellitus patients
