Endocrine control of growth (Pathophys) Flashcards
Slope seen in catch up growth? When does it come
Faster increase in rate, seen after a child recovers from an illness
Three major hormones involved in normal growth
Insulin, TH, GH
What parts of the body grow the fastest
Brain and head
What happens in children w/ androgen insufficiency
No growth spurt
“Eunichoidal habitus”
What happens in children with excess GH
Grows fast, tends to stop growing earlier also
2 forms of GH
90% 20k form- growth promoting and has other metabolic actions
10% 22k form- just growth promoting
GH hormone functions
Increased body mass, tallness, long bone growth
Effects of GH on fat metabolism
Increased, leads to increased FFA
Effects of GH on glucose metabolism
Mildly impairs glucose uptake and utilization
Dual effector hypothesis
GH and IFG work together (IGF-1 also effects liver)
GH causes renal intake of what to increase
Nitrogen, Ca, PO4 (to be used in building)
What is needed for normal secretion of growth hormone? How?
Thyroid hormone
Increases number and size of somatotrophes
(Insulin also needed)
What has the opposite effect on GH than thyroid hormones
Glucorticoids
What effect does insulin induced hypoglycemia cause on healthy persons
Stimulates GH
