  • *sudden worsening of symptoms in diagnosed or undiagnosed chronic adrenal insufficiency
  • *precipitated by a “stressful” event (illness, surgery, trauma, volume loss, hypothermia, etc

Etiologies

  • abrupt withdrawal of glucocorticoids (w/o tapering) MCC
  • bilateral adrenal infarction (hemorrhage)

CM
-shock mc s/s–>hypotension, hypovolemia, nonspecific symptoms

Diagnosis/labs

  • hyponatremia
  • hyperK
  • hypoglycemia
  • cortisol and aldosterone (confirms diagnosis)
