Endocannabinoids System Flashcards
When does the ECBD system start?
exists throughout life (before birth)
What does the ECBD system explain ?
it explains how cannabis works but not why it exists
What are the receptors of the ECBD system?
cb1 and cb2
Where are CB1 receptors found?
brain, lungs, liver, kidney, bladder, pancreas, testes, skin, intestines and bones
Where are CB2 receptors found?
lungs, skin, pancreas, spleen, testes and bones
When do we make ECBDs?
We make them in response to our environment - hunger, pain, stress, exercise and time of day
What are the responses of the ECBDs system?
appetite, coping with stress, pain relief
What does a down-regulated ECBD system do?
exacerbate symptoms
What does an up-regulated ECBD system do?
auto protective, relieve symptoms of pain, fear and stress
What happens to the ECBD system during pain?
ECBD levels are increased, CB receptors are found in the pain’s pathway
What happens when CB receptors are activated
reduce pain
What happens to the ECBD system during stress?
system is highly adaptive and regulates stress levels
What happens to the ECBD system during memory formation?
highly integrated, responsive and controlled, promotes retrieval of working memory and cognition, promoted fear extinction and inhibits retrieval of traumatic memories
What happens to the ECBD during obesity?
increased appetite, higher ECBD during obesity leading to signals which control cell function of CB receptors leading to weight gain
What is rimonabant?
CB receptor antagonist, signals which control cell function, leading to weight loss
