- Hospital must perform screening exam to anyone coming to ED for care
- Must treat pt w/ emergency medical condition until stable or transfer out
- May not transfer unstable pt

When in absence of immediate medical attention could result in:
- Placing health of person/unborn child in serious jeopardy
- Serious impairment bodily function
- Serious dysfxn of body part
- Severe pain
- Pregnant woman w/ active contractions
