Culture
Shared, overt, and covert understandings that constitute conventions and practices, and the ideas, symbols, and concrete artifacts that sustain conventions and practices, and make them meaningful
Cultural competence
Awareness of cultural factors that influence another’s views and attitudes, and an assimilation of that awareness into professional practice
Cultural humility
Having a humble and respectful attitude toward people of other cultures. It involves ongoing self-exploration combined w/ a willingness to learn from others

- Respectful communication: eliminate assumptions about culture
- Collaborative partnerships
Cultural proficiency
A transformational process that allows individuals to acknowledge interdependence and align w/ a group other than their own. Culturally proficient health care, in particular, makes use of a pt’s language and cultural tools to improve outcomes for that individual.
