Diarrheal disease
Acute Stage: Restrict from contact with patient, patient’s surroundings, or food handling.
Convalescent Stage: Restrict from care of high risk patients
Hepatitis A
Restrict from contact with patient, patient’s environment, and food handling
Hepatitis B
not performing exposure-prone procedures: No restriction; refer to state regulations
performing exposure prone procedures: do not perform exposure-prone invasive procedures until counsel from expert review panel; refer to state regulations
Herpes simplex
Genital: No restrictions
Hands (herpetic whitlow): restrict from contact with patient and patient’s surroundings
Orofacial: evaluate need to restrict from care of high-risk patients
HIV
Do not perform exposure-prone invasive procedures until review from expert panel
Observe standard precautions
Refer to state regulations
Measles, active
exclude from duty until 7 days after the rash appears
Measles, post-exposure
exclude from work from 5th day after first exposure, through 21st day after last exposure, or until 4 days after rash appears
Mumps, active
exclude from duty until 9 days after parotitis
Mumps, post-exposure
exclude from 9th day after first exposure through 26th day after last exposure, or until 9 days after onset of parotitis
Pertussis, active
exclude from duty from beginning of catarrhal stage through 3rd week after onset of paroxysms or until 5 days after start of effective therapy
Pertussis, post-exposure asymptomatic personnel
no exclusion, treat with prophylaxis
Pertussis, post-exposure symptomatic personnel
exclude from duty until 5 days after effective therapy
Rubella, active
exclude from duty until 5 days after rash appears
Rubella, post-exposure susceptible personnel
exclude from duty from 7th day after first exposure through 21st day after last exposure
Varicella, active
exclude from duty until all lesions dry and crust
Varicella, post-exposure susceptible personnel
exclude from work from 10th day after first exposure through 21st day (28th if VZIG given) after last exposure
Zoster, localized in healthy person
cover lesions; restrict from care of high-risk patient until all lesions dry and crust
Zoster, generalized or localized in immunosuppressed person
restrict from patient contact until all lesions dry and crust
Zoster, postexposure susceptible personnel
restrict from patient contact from 10th day after first exposure through 21st day (28th day if VZIG given) or if disease occurs, until lesions dry and crust
Baseline TST
> = 10 positive result first or second step
Serial testing TST
increase of >= 10 mm is positive
Known exposure TST
> =5 is positive for anyone with baseline of 0
increase of >=10 with previous result of >=0
