emotions Flashcards
definition
negative and positive feelings that are produced by particular situations
3 types of emotional resonse
Behavioural
autonomic
Hormonal
James - Lange hypothesis
emotion-producing situations elicit an appropriate set of physiological responses.
feelings are results not causes of emotions
Emotions are communicated by
1) postural changes, 2) facial expressions, 3)nonverbal sounds (sighs, moans, growls). The role of these expressions is to tell other individuals how we feel, and more importantly, what we are likely to do.
Amydala components
from the thalamus and hyppocampus and cortex. Afferent to Basolateral nucleus, Efferent to amydala central nucleus, hypothalamus and brain stem
When the central nucleus is stimulated the animal shows
sings of fear and agitation.
Heart rate, pupil dilation, bloodpressure.
HYPOTHALAMUS:the giant of
motivation.
Medial hypoth.: rage, fear, attack
Lateral hypoth.: positive reinforcement
ORBITOFRONTAL CORTEX
Change of character, eotional and intellectual regression, inability to make plans
Input and output of Orbitofrontal cortex
Input: from DM, temporal cortex, ventral tegmental area, olfactory system, amygdala
Output: to cingulate gyrus, hippocampus, amygdala, temporal cortex, lateral hypothalamus
Lesion of the subdominant hemisphere:
1) optimistic mood
2) regulation of heart rate in aversive conditions (initial decrease, followed by increase) is lost
3) arrhythmias tend to develop following right hemispheric damage
