Emotions Flashcards
What two systems are responsible for the sensations of emotions?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. (Autonomic nervous system)
Emotion
A subjective state that is usually accompanied by distinctive behaviors as well as involuntary physiological changes
Are there specific autonomic patterns for each emotion?
No
What are the 4 pairs of opposites that comprise basic emotions?
Joy/sadness, affection/disgust, anger/fear, expectation/surprise.
Superficial facial muscles
Attach at different points on the skin, when they contact they change shape of features
Deep facial muscles
Attached to bone and produce larger scale movements
What are the two cranial nerves that innervate the face?
Facial nerve and the motor branch of the trigeminal nerve
Facial nerve
Innervates superficial facial muscles of expression
Trigeminal-motor branch
Innervates muscles that move the jaw
Facial feedback hypothesis
Idea that sensory feedback from our facial expressions can affect our mood
Evolutionary psychology
A field of study devoted to asking how natural selection has shaped behavior in humans and other animals. Believe that emotions are adaptive through natural selection
Brain self stimulation
The process in which animals will work to provide electrical stimulation to particular brain sites, because it’s very rewarding
Medial forebrain bundle
Collection of axons in the midline of the brain, thought to be affected by self stimulation
Nucleus accumbens
Region of dopaminergic innervation from the VTA. Reward system
Decorticate rage
Sudden intense rage characterized by attacks that lack clear direction. Showing that brain lesions affect emotions.
