Agression And Stress Flashcards
Intermale aggression
Aggression between males if the same species observed in most vertebrates
Aggression
Behavior that is intended to cause pain or harm to others
What is one factor that can influence fighting behavior?
Androgens such as testosterone
Aggressive behavior and testosterone are the same in humans as in other animals. T or F
False
What can confound the correlation of aggression and testosterone?
Experiences can affect testosterone levels, and tester one may be a result rather than a cause of aggression
How does serotonin affect aggression?
Usually inhibits it
What part of the brain is indicated in sudden violent attacks?
The temporal lobe
Psychopath
An individual incapable of experiencing remorse. Linked to uncontrolled violent acts
Stress
Any circumstance that upsets homeostatic balance
Alarm reaction
The initial response to stress
What happens during the alarm reaction?
Hypothalamus activates the sympathetic nervous system fight or flight.
Adrenal medulla
Inner core of the adrenal gland, activated by sympathetic nervous system to release epinephrine and norepinephrine
Adrenal cortex
The outer rind of the adrenal gland. Releases adrenal steroid hormones such as cortisol. Ready body for action.
Adrenal steroid hormone
A steroid hormone that is secreted by the adrenal cortex
Cortisol
A glucocorticoid stress hormone of the adrenal cortex that releases body stores of energy
Adaptation stage
Second stage in stress response, including activation of the appropriate response and the reestbalishment of homeostatic balance
Exhaustion stage
A stage that is caused by prolonged stress and is characterized by increased susceptibility to disease
Stress immunization
The concept that mild stress early in life makes an individual better able to handle stress later in life
Epigenetic regulation
Changes in gene expression that are due to environmental effects rather than to changes in the nucleotide sequence of the gene
Psychosomatic medicine
A field of study that emphasizes the role of the psychological factors in disease
Health psychology/behavioral medicine
Focuses on psychological influences on health related processes, such as why people become ill or how they remain healthy
Psychoneuroimmunology
Study how the immune system interacts with the nervous system and behavior
Why does stress suppress the immune system?
To save energy that would be consumed by the immune system, favored reactions to short term problems
