emotions are strong impulses that urge us to make immediate actions, the root of emotions is the word motere which means to move, that’s why we see not rational creatures move always fast.

Q

what is the science behind emotions?(chapter one)

A

the human brain grow up from bottom, with the brainstem being the first station in brain: and it controls breathing, metabolism, organs, preprogrammed reactions, movements such as shrinking from pain.
from brainstem emerged the emotional center (limbic system) which gave us two important skills the ability to remember and learn, from the emotional center the rational mind neocortix emerged, this is not just rational but can also be emotional its the reason we have feelings about our feelings.
this explains why emotions out fast our rationality, because the emotional brain is quicker but also a bit sloppy

Q

what are some characteristics of emotional brain(chapter one)

A

1-associative: it triggers memories based on symbolic elements instead of literal elements, this is why we appreciate art.
2-categorical: it looks at the world as black and white, highlighting things that support it beliefs and disregarding what doesn’t.
3-absolutist: the rational has capability to change while emotional take it to absolute.
4-individual: every person has their own emotional brain its not patterned for everyone that’s why we have different emotions about the same things.

Q

what is the amygdala(chapter two)

A

there are two amygdalas in the base of our limbic system and its the command center of our emotional brain, responsible for interpreting emotional signals and for storing our emotional memory, the amygdala is constantly on the lookout for danger and dislike.

Q

how our brain is designed to get the sensory information first?(chapter two)

A

information from ear or eyes are designed to go to amygdala first before the neocortex, means the amygdala can respond while the neocortex is still considering the info, the more intense the signals that goes to the amygdala are the more the memory imprints.

In the beginning of our life we are much more emotional than rational because the amygdala is fully developed while neocortex is not. also this is a reason that our childhood experiences change how we feel emotionally about things in older age.

Q

what is the neocortex?(chapter two)

A

there is a moderator for the amygdala at the other end of the neocortex, in the prefrontal lobe just behind the forehead, this area lower the emotional responses and quells feelings in order to think more rationally.

the prefrontal cortex also contains the working memory (the facts we need to complete and solve tasks) but again since we said amygdala is connected to prefrontal cortex, if the amygdala sends strong sign it might interferes with the working memory. this explain why emotional distress has big effects on the child ability to learn.
