EMOTIONAL Flashcards
Define the term ‘attachment’
Refers to a relationship bond between a child or young person and their primary caregiver.
Explain the difference between secure and insecure attachment.
- Secure attachment = show distress when caregiver leaves, happy with strangers when care giver is there.
- Insecure attachment=
Avoidant- infants more independent, may go to stranger for comfort
Ambivalent- care giver has an inconsistent response so infants can be clingy and dependent, difficult to soothe, do not feel secure around care giver.
Two reasons why attachment between a caregiver and child may be disrupted.
-Lack of time- caregiver might have a lot of work commitment.
-Illness of caregiver or baby
Two criticisms of Bowlby’s theory of attachment.
-Bowlby believed attachment is a natural biological process, whilst others suggest it is learned behaviour influenced by external factors.
- Rutter states that Bowlby oversimplified the theory of attachment and argued that maternal deprivation in itself may not lead to long-term issues.
What is meant by the term ‘separation anxiety’.
When an infant becomes anxious and fearful around strangers when the main care giver has left.
3 ways care givers can promote a secure attachment with an infant/ child.
- Sensitive responsiveness= responding accurately to baby signals.
- As a baby is fed, held and spoken to emotional, loving relationships develop and deepen - basis for strong future relationships.
- Quality of the time spent with carers determines emotional attachment.
Define the term ‘self-concept’.
How we perceive our behaviours, abilities, and unique characteristics.
Define the term ‘self-image’.
How you see yourself plus how others see you.
Define the term ‘self-esteem’.
How you feel and value yourself.
3 ways a secure attachment in infancy/ early childhood can positively impact emotional wellbeing and social development in later life.
- Now believed that babies can form close attachment with more than one person- foundations of strong social development.
- Quality of the time spent with carers determines emotional attachment.
- Babies who find that adults respond quickly to their cries become trusting of life and are well-attached in warm, loving relationships later in life.
