Emotion and Stress Flashcards
Amygdala, emotions
Autonomic response
anterior cingulate gyrus
feelings, somatic
ventromedial cortex & prefrontal cortex
regulation
Three amygdala groups
- corticomedial: olfactory
- basolateral nuclei: other inputs
- central nucleus: outputs
Three major inputs to the amygdala
- hippocampus
- anterior cingulate
- ventromedial prefrontal cortex
Major amygdala outputs
- thalamus and sensory cortices
- hipocampus
- anterior cingulate and ventromedial/orbitofactory cortex
How does the amygdala manage fear?
Evaluates the emotional significance of a sound and stimulates the hypothalamus to activate the appropriate autonomic and hormonal responses
Ventral anterior cingulate cortex
Gives rise to the mental states of emotion, reporting to VMPFC, and then motivates appraise responses to the DLPFC.
Ventromedial prefrontal cortex
Regulate responses to emotional stimuli
Path and function of serotonin
Regulate mood
Raphe nuclei to medial forebrain bundle to emotional circuit
General Adaptation Syndrome
- Alarm, via sympathetic NS
- Resistance, via pituitary-adrenal cortex to release glucortioids
- Exhaustion, lack of energy
Episodic memory and immune response have what in common?
Low levels of stress improve these function, but high levels impair them
