emotion Flashcards
how are emotions adaptive
can facilitate adaptive responses to respond to challneges posed by environment
- emotions prepare our body for action and produce an adaptive output-> behaviour
what 6 emotions did Ekman propose
sad, happy, anger, disgust, surprise and fear
whats the dimensional account of emotion theory
emotions not in discrete categories
- but understood within a continuous space defined by a few core dimensions
- describes the underlying properties of emotion
what are the 2 components of the dimensional account of emotion theory
- valence and arousal
what does valence and arousal mean in emotion
- valence: describes the positivty or negativity of an emotion
- arousal: refers to level of energy or activation associated with an emotion
whats the apprasisal theory of emotion
that emotions arise from our evaluations of situations, events or stimuli in realtion to our goals/ well being.
- emphasises how emotions are not automatic responses but are shaped by how individuals interpret significant experiences
what are the two types of appraisals
- primary: how significant the event is, if its positive, stressful or detrimental to individual
- secondary: to cope with the consequences of the event
role of amygdala in regulating emotion
- contributes to assesing and responding to environmental threats
- associated with emotional behaviours (fear and aggression mainly)
- prompts appropriate response
whats it Called when there’s been damage to amygdala since childhood
focal bilateral amygdala lesions
who was patient SM
- disease causing damage to amygdala
- no fear response, or very little fear recorded to fearful situations
- can response to other emotions very well and intactfully
whats the dual pathway model of fear
- brain uses 2 pathways to process fear messages
- low road and high road
what does the low road process of the dual pathway model of fear do
goes directly to amygdala, bypasses higher thinking of brain, triggers fear response
what does the high road process of the dual pathway model of fear do
leads to cerebral cortex, where message is interpreted more carefully
where does processing fear go to after stimuli
the sensory thalamus
whats James- Lange’s theory of emotion
emotions occur as a result of physiological reactions to events
